The Cape Verde Phenomenon at the 2026 World Cup: The Family Business That Bet on the Country When No One Else Did
Cape Verde's journey in the 2026 World Cup captured the interest of the entire football world. In their first participation, they managed to advance past the group stage and were the only team not to lose to the champion. But behind this sporting milestone lies a much bigger story.
The national team fought to compete with the greatest resources possible, although not many were willing to be part of this adventure. Among those who did contribute, a small family business stepped up to join in their remarkable achievement.
Capelli Sport took on the commitment to dress Cape Verde in the 2026 World Cup.
Far from the recognized brands: the story of Capelli Sport
Adidas, Nike, Umbro, and Puma were the most prominent brands at the 2026 World Cup among all the teams. However, some teams had to seek their uniforms elsewhere. No major firm was willing to dress Cape Verde, until a little-known name emerged before the international tournament.
Capelli Sport, an American brand founded in 2011 by George Altirs, had no hesitation in agreeing to dress the Blue Sharks. Far from having the recognition of its competitors, the bet represented a great risk for such a small company.
Its founder came up with the idea after managing a youth club called Cedar Stars Academy. The institution was looking for uniforms, but no company wanted to combine the chosen colors or use the intended design for the kit.
Rather than resigning, Altirs decided to manufacture his own clothing. At that time, he was running GMA Accessories, a company dedicated to creating clothing and accessories for other brands. The strategy is revealing to understand how you can find opportunities where others see discards: projects rejected by Nike or Adidas were taken on by them. Thus, their relationship with the African country was born.
The agreement with Cape Verde for the 2026 World Cup and how sales grew
The 2026 World Cup became a true challenge for both. Cape Verde had never been in a World Cup, nor did Capelli Sport envision reaching such a significant event so quickly.
The first step was to find a suitable design: they drew inspiration from the Atlantic Ocean and the nickname "Blue Sharks" to bring this jersey to life. Instead of reusing templates like other brands do, they decided it would be an exclusive model to represent the identity of an entire nation.
Cape Verde's outstanding performance, combined with the large number of followers gained by Vozinha and Sidny Lopes Cabral scoring the best goal of the tournament, were key to boosting sales. The company received orders from Mexico, Brazil, Australia, the United States, and several European countries, as no copies were available in any store.
Thus, while the goalkeeper gained millions of followers on Instagram and the country made a name for itself in the football world, the brand achieved exposure that no one had thought possible years ago. From dressing their own team with their ideas to becoming part of the new phenomenon in this sport, there was only one factor: giving a chance to a nation that wanted to be the surprise of the tournament and succeeded.
