Wasabi Wallet launched version 2.8 with P2P filters and bitcoin payments in coinjoin
- Users can now group multiple payments into a single transaction.
- The project incorporates an experimental programming language called Scheme.
The Wasabi Wallet team has released version 2.8.0 of its bitcoin (BTC) wallet. This release cuts an important link with its own servers and adds the option to pay directly within a coinjoin transaction.
Version 2.8 has been available since June 27, 2026 (with a more recent update on July 22) for Windows, Ubuntu/Debian, other Linux distributions, and macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), according to the changelog published in its GitHub repository.
The issue was that, until now, that data package was generated and distributed by Wasabi's own server, meaning there was still a central point that the wallet depended on.
With version 2.8, that filter is downloaded directly from the Bitcoin P2P network, the same distributed network that nodes use to communicate with each other. This is possible because the Bitcoin protocol itself has already standardized that filter format.
The practical advantage: Wasabi stops relying on a centralized server, reducing a single point of failure and reinforcing the wallet's decentralization proposal.
Additionally, there is a speed improvement: new wallets no longer download the complete history of the blockchain (the accounting file of Bitcoin) to verify that they do not have previous funds, thanks to a mechanism called wallet birthday checkpoints.
As explained in the Criptopedia of CriptoNoticias, a coinjoin is a transaction in which several users combine their coins to make it difficult for an external observer to track who owns each fund.
Until now, if a user wanted to pay someone, they first had to wait for the coinjoin round to finish and then make the payment in a separate transaction.
Version 2.8 of Wasabi Wallet allows sending the payment directly within the coinjoin round.
The advantage is twofold: it makes better use of each block's space (a single transaction does the work of two) and it gains privacy on several fronts. According to the development team:
- It does not reveal how long the user has had those coins, a piece of information that would normally expose usage patterns.
- It does not reveal how much money the sender has left after paying (the change).
- Multiple payments can be grouped in a single transaction without exposing that they all came from the same person.
Moreover, independently of the coinjoin, this version adds batch payments: sending to multiple addresses in a single transaction, instead of one transaction for each payment, which also saves block space.
Wasabi now allows setting fees of up to 0.1 satoshi per virtual byte (sat/vB), well below the usual minimum.
According to the team, this can represent savings of up to 90% compared to conventional fees.
The downside is that a transaction with such a low fee may take longer to confirm or get stuck if the network is congested; for those cases, the wallet allows using Replace By Fee (RBF), a feature that replaces the transaction with another one with a higher fee to speed up its confirmation.
The update adds support for Linux on arm64 processors and simplifies the use of Wasabi on Tails and Whonix ---two privacy-focused operating systems--- where previously Tor had to be configured manually and now it is detected and adjusted automatically.
It also incorporates compatibility with Signet, an alternative test network to testnet.
Additionally, the development team updated the version of Tor integrated into the wallet, in anticipation of the end of support that the Tor Project will provide for versions prior to 0.4.9 starting September 1, 2026.
As an experimental feature, this version also introduces Scheme, a programming language for automating tasks that the team describes as a way to make Wasabi programmable, queryable, and extensible.
