The ideal invention for running at night: a smart vest with LED lights for greater safety

Running at night requires more than just good physical condition. Visibility, traffic, and the ability to call for help in case of an emergency are aspects that many people consider before starting their run, even on a path they traverse every day.

In response to this need, a group of engineers from the Netherlands developed a device designed for those who engage in outdoor physical activity. The product features bright lighting, special sensors, and assistance tools to provide an extra layer of protection during each outing.

This smart vest is the perfect ally for those who train at night.

The device, called RunSafePro, was designed to enhance the safety of those who train outdoors at night or in low-light conditions. Although it was initially focused on runners, it can also be useful for cyclists, hikers, dog walkers, or anyone walking through the city.

The vest incorporates an intelligent system with reflective elements and 360-degree LED lighting, allowing drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to identify the user's presence from a greater distance. One of its most notable features is the integrated rear radar, a sensor that detects vehicles, bicycles, or people approaching from behind up to a distance of 30 meters.

When this happens, the user receives a warning via vibration on their phone or a compatible smartwatch, an audible alert in headphones, or a visual signal on the vest itself. The system does not indicate from which side the detected object is approaching, although the developers claim that the 30 meters of advance notice provides enough time to react and change course if necessary.

The garment also includes an emergency button designed to act instantly. With a single press, it silently sends the GPS location to the user's main trusted contacts. If the user presses the button twice, it not only shares the location but also activates a sound alarm and sends a notification to all registered emergency contacts. For now, the associated app supports up to 50 contacts.

Another incorporated tool is a motion sensor that identifies a sudden stop during the run. If this occurs, the system sends a query to the phone or smartwatch, and if no response is received within the set time, it automatically shares the location with the main contacts.

To access all the assistance features, the vest must be paired with an Android phone or iPhone. Those who prefer to run without their phone can connect it to a compatible smartwatch with eSIM.

In addition to its smart features, RunSafePro was designed for comfort during physical activity. The vest comes in a single adjustable size that fits individuals ranging from S to XXL and heights between 160 and 200 centimeters.

The structure is designed to be worn over sports clothing, and the creators recommend avoiding its use over hydration vests, as the radar needs to remain close to the body to maintain accuracy.

The model includes a pocket for carrying a mobile phone and another compartment for storing keys or small items during training. The electronic module can be removed before washing, making the garment fully washable without affecting the technological components. In any case, this removable unit is resistant to both rain and sweat.

The battery life varies between 3 and 6 hours, depending on the level of lighting and the functions activated during use. Configuration is done through a dedicated app, which will cost $0.99 per month to access its services. Currently, the project is seeking funding through Kickstarter, with an initial contribution to obtain a unit starting at $119, while the expected retail price will be $175.
