Stripe Plans to Acquire OpenRouter: Is AI the Focus of Future Payment Landscapes?

Stripe is turning every step of the AI Agent into its own business with a stablecoin settlement layer.

On July 24, The Wall Street Journal reported that payment giant Stripe is in talks to acquire AI model transit hub OpenRouter, with an announcement expected soon. However, negotiations could still break down or be interrupted by other buyers. According to insiders, the acquisition values OpenRouter at approximately $10 billion, a significant increase from its post-funding valuation of $1.3 billion after completing a $113 million Series B round in May. Investors behind OpenRouter include a16z, Menlo Ventures, and CapitalG, the investment arm of Google's parent company, Alphabet.

On the surface, this transaction appears to be a pure AI infrastructure acquisition, but Stripe's identity has long transcended that of a credit card acquirer. Over the past year and a half, it has spent $1.1 billion to acquire stablecoin company Bridge and has incubated its own stablecoin settlement public chain, Tempo, essentially becoming one of the most aggressive participants in the global stablecoin infrastructure.

Prior to this, several large tech companies had approached OpenRouter seeking potential acquisitions. Stripe and OpenRouter have already had business interactions: OpenRouter has long used Stripe Invoicing, Stripe Tax, and Radar to manage its global billing and risk control. This rumored acquisition is, in some sense, a vertical integration of its own customer.

Payments, wallets, ordering, and settlement—Stripe has not missed a beat

In February 2025, Stripe completed its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure company Bridge for $1.1 billion, marking its largest acquisition to date and addressing the issue of stablecoin inflows and outflows.

Four months later, Stripe acquired embedded wallet infrastructure provider Privy, which has served over 75 million accounts, solving the wallet and identity issues.

By the end of September that same year, Stripe and OpenAI jointly launched the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), introducing Instant Checkout within ChatGPT. Through the new payment primitive, 'Shared Payment Token', AI Agents can make purchases without accessing users' real payment credentials, addressing the issue of how AI Agents can place orders.

In March 2026, Stripe launched the mainnet of the payment public chain Tempo, incubated with Paradigm, and simultaneously released the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). From then on, AI Agents can autonomously complete small, high-frequency payments using USDC on Tempo, with limits and merchant whitelists controlling authorization, eliminating the need for manual approval of each transaction, thus solving the issue of how AI Agents can make payments.

By the end of June, Stripe joined over 140 companies, including Visa, Mastercard, BlackRock, and Coinbase, to form the newly established stablecoin alliance Open USD. This alliance, operated by the independent company Open Standard, is led by Bridge co-founder Zach Abrams.

Individually, each step is merely an expansion of the stablecoin business; together, Stripe has integrated multiple steps required for an AI Agent to complete a transaction—ordering, payment, and settlement—into its own business scope.

OpenRouter Complements AI Model Services and Billing

OpenRouter does not produce models; it serves as a 'model router': aggregating over 60 providers and more than 300 models, helping developers compare prices, switch models, and automatically downgrade to backup models in case of a model failure, taking about a 5% cut per invocation.

Its founder, Alex Atallah, is a co-founder and former CTO of the NFT trading platform OpenSea. According to data disclosed by OpenRouter itself, its annualized revenue reached $50 million by March 2026, a significant increase from $19 million at the end of 2025, with over 1.5 million active developers and processing inference requests in the tens of billions.

Tempo and MPP solve the question of 'how AI Agents can make payments', ACP addresses 'how AI Agents can place orders', while OpenRouter fills in 'which model AI Agents should call and how they should be billed'.

When these three layers come together, it means that a single AI Agent task—from selecting a model, calling inference, to the final commercial settlement—could theoretically pass through Stripe's pipeline. This corroborates its previous positioning as 'the AWS of the currency world' as stated by its crypto business head.

Such ambition is not unique to Stripe. In May, Circle launched the Agent Stack aimed at AI Agents, which includes Agent Wallets and micropayment tools Nanopayments; Google released the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).

According to data from agenteconomy.to, the x402 protocol, led by Coinbase and deployed on chains like Base and Solana, had processed over 190 million on-chain transactions as of July 23. Providing payment infrastructure for AI Agents is becoming a common judgment among several giants.

However, the reality is stark. A report released by crypto trading and research firm Keyrock in May indicated that from May 2025 to April 2026, the total payment volume settled on-chain by AI Agents was approximately $73 million. In contrast, the total settlement volume for stablecoins reached a staggering $46 trillion, with the former accounting for less than one ten-thousandth of the latter. The current valuation is largely based on narrative and early positioning, far from achieving real scale.

Stripe Wants More Than Just a Transit Business

Financial analysis site FourWeekMBA, based on token usage ranking data publicly disclosed by OpenRouter, shows that the token share of American models on the OpenRouter platform has dropped from about 70% in June 2025 to about 30% in June 2026, with Chinese open-source models like DeepSeek becoming the main force in invocation volume.

The deal is far from finalized. The Wall Street Journal reported that negotiations could still break down or be interrupted by other buyers. Stripe is also simultaneously in talks with private equity firm Advent International to acquire PayPal, straining both its energy and capital.

But regardless of whether this deal ultimately materializes, Stripe's path over the past 18 months has become clear. It is no longer satisfied with being the cash register of the AI era; it aims to become the default infrastructure provider in the connection link between AI and users.

For the blockchain industry, the price of this acquisition may not be the most important aspect. What truly deserves attention is whether stablecoins can leverage the AI Agent economy to find the first scalable inter-machine payment scenario, thereby validating the correlation and synergistic value between AI and blockchain.
