Amazon Reports $62 Billion Profit in Quarter: What Explains the Surge
Amazon's profit triples and the market reacts with an 8% rise
Amazon reported a net profit of $62.65 billion in the second quarter of 2026, equivalent to $5.75 per share. This figure far exceeded analysts' projections compiled by FactSet, which estimated $1.82 per share. This kind of surprise prompts a strong market reaction: in after-hours trading in New York, the company's shares rose by 8.5%.
To gauge the leap, one only needs to compare it with the same period last year. In the second quarter of 2025, the company reported a profit of $18.2 billion, or $1.68 per share. We are talking about a multiplication by 3.4 times in just 12 months. Total revenue grew by 20% to reach $200.6 billion, solidifying Amazon as one of the most profitable companies on the planet.
The result reinforces a trend we closely follow in financial coverage: American big techs are turning massive spending on artificial intelligence into real revenue, not just promises. And Amazon seems to be at the forefront of this race.
AWS is the engine driving the machine
The star of the results has a name: Amazon Web Services. The cloud computing division grew by 36.7% year-over-year, the fastest pace in 18 consecutive quarters. It has been four and a half years since such strong expansion was recorded.
Andy Jassy, Amazon's CEO, highlighted that the artificial intelligence and custom chip divisions each surpassed the $25 billion mark in annualized revenue. This is a significant milestone. When the generative AI race began between 2023 and 2024, the big question in the market was whether the billion-dollar investments from big techs would convert into proportional revenue. In the case of AWS, the answer is starting to become evident.
The cloud has ceased to be merely server infrastructure and has become the platform where companies of all sizes train AI models, process data, and create machine learning-based applications. This structural movement directly benefits those with the scale to offer the service. And no one has more scale than Amazon, Microsoft, and Google in this segment.
$200 billion in capex: Amazon's most expensive bet in history
The company confirmed plans to invest $200 billion in capital expenditures throughout 2026, focusing almost exclusively on artificial intelligence infrastructure. To put this into context, this amount exceeds the GDP of countries like Portugal and is nearly four times what Petrobras intends to invest in the same period.
This figure is not exactly new. Amazon had already indicated a brutal escalation of investments at the beginning of the year. But the confirmation in a quarter with such strong profits sends a clear message to the market: the company has the cash to sustain the bet without compromising short-term profitability.
The question investors need to monitor is the sustainability of this level of capex. In the technology sector, aggressive investment cycles can generate exponential returns or destroy value, depending on execution. So far, Amazon's numbers point to the former scenario.
What Amazon's results signal to the market
Amazon's balance sheet is not an isolated event. It is part of a results season where major tech companies are proving that the era of artificial intelligence generates measurable financial returns, not just market narratives.
For those following the American market, the most relevant data may not be the profit itself, but the growth rate of AWS. A 36.7% increase for an operation of this size suggests that demand for AI infrastructure is accelerating, not slowing down. This has implications for the entire supply chain, from chip manufacturers like Nvidia and AMD to smaller companies providing components and adjacent services.
The 8% rise in after-hours trading also needs to be read in context. Amazon's stock has already accumulated significant appreciation over the past 12 months, so a reaction of this magnitude indicates that the market sees room for upward revisions of estimates. In such scenarios, the ripple effect often benefits other companies in the sector.
The $200 billion capex, on the other hand, raises a legitimate question: what happens if demand for AI slows down before these investments mature? It is a risk that no one wants to discuss while the results surprise positively. But part of responsible analysis is to keep this variable on the radar.
