The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced new tariffs on goods from 60 countries that utilize forced labor. The tariff rates depend on the existence of an effective ban on the import of such goods in the respective country. The tariffs are implemented under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974. For countries with an effective ban, such as Canada, the United Kingdom, India, and others, a tariff of 10% is set. For certain goods from the EU, Japan, and other countries, the tariffs will be 10% or 12.5%. For other countries under investigation, the tariff will be 12.5%. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has provided exceptions for raw materials that may face shortages in the American market, as well as for goods that cannot be produced in the U.S. Exceptions also apply to goods from Argentina, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and other countries. Trump previously imposed a 50% tariff on goods from Canada in response to unequal treatment of American products.
