SK Hynix's Listing Drives Dollar Repatriation for Korean Exporters

On July 27, SK Hynix made a record debut on the U.S. stock market, raising $26.5 billion, which led to a strong rebound of the Korean won and prompted South Korean authorities to accelerate efforts to encourage exporters to repatriate overseas dollars. Vice Minister of Finance Heo Chang urged exporters at a meeting to convert more of their overseas earnings into won and bring foreign funds back to the country. SK Hynix's dollar-selling actions demonstrate that corporate moves can significantly influence market trends, strengthening the determination of South Korean authorities to boost the local currency through large export companies. Stephen Lee, an economist at Meritz Securities in Seoul, pointed out that SK Hynix's actions triggered a broader wave of corporate dollar selling, and the continued strengthening of the won has encouraged other companies to start selling dollars, facilitating a substitution effect in capital flows.
