Kevin Kelly: The Importance of Token Costs Will Give Chinese Open Source Models an Advantage

On July 18, at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, futurist Kevin Kelly stated that the cost of tokens will become increasingly important, giving open source models an advantage in Chinese AI. He pointed out that while there is currently little attention on token costs, as consumption increases, the cost issue will come to the forefront. He mentioned that if costs could be provided at just one-tenth of Anthropic's, it would disrupt the status quo. At the same time, Kevin Kelly emphasized that open source models require sufficient funding support, as their profitability is not on par with closed source models, and building large models requires substantial financial resources.
